Leadership

On 7 June 2025, Senior Management Teams (SMTs) from across the province convened for the launch of the Section 58B Schools Programme Workshop, an important initiative aimed at improving leadership and accountability in underperforming schools. The workshop served as an introductory session to a structured support programme that will unfold over the coming weeks, tailored to the specific needs of schools placed under Section 58B.

During the session, SMTs were introduced to the key focus areas of the upcoming training modules, which include:

  • Curriculum Management – Strengthening curriculum planning and delivery for better learning outcomes.
  • Data-Informed Decision-Making – Leveraging school-based data to inform strategies and interventions.
  • Policy Development and Implementation – Translating policy into effective school-level practices.
  • 21st Century Thought Leadership – Building adaptive, innovative leaders for modern schooling environments.
  • Let’s Support Literacy and Numeracy – Reinforcing foundational skills through focused teaching and support.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of regular engagement between District Officials and schools to establish Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Communities of Practice (COPs). These forums will enable collaboration, peer learning and joint problem-solving. Additional support through School Self-Evaluation (SSE) mediation workshops and tailored reports, shared with relevant directorates will ensure that schools receive the resources and guidance they need to drive improvement.

A particularly moving part of the day was the recognition of SMT members of 31 well performing schools, who had been placed under the Section 58B categorisation in 2021 and successfully turned their school around and maintained their performance over a 3 year period. These leaders were awarded certificates of achievement by MGSLG in acknowledgment of their dedication and impact in changing the status of their schools.

Ms Gloria Henry, Principal of GW Randfontein Secondary School and Ms Itumeleng Gloria Panyane of Thulani Secondary School delivered powerful testimonies, sharing how the MGSLG Section 58B support programme, initiated in 2021 by Programme Manager, Roxanne Reddhi, had transformed their schools. They highlighted the value of targeted training, leadership mentoring and structured accountability in restoring academic standards and school morale.

This first workshop set a powerful tone for the programme ahead, grounded in collaboration, capacity building and the belief that with the right support, every school can succeed.
