The Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance
(MGSLG) continues to lead the way in empowering teachers through its innovative
training programmes. One of its flagship initiatives, the Secondary School
Improvement Programme (SSIP), is designed to enhance teaching effectiveness and
improve learner performance across various subjects.
As part of this initiative, MGSLG collaborated with Sci-Bono
to strengthen teachers’ capacity-building skills, ensuring they are better
equipped to support learners in the classroom. During the recent training, Life
Sciences educators engaged in hands-on DNA extraction sessions with Sci-Bono
experts. Using mobile DNA extraction kits, teachers explored practical
applications of scientific concepts—an experience that will allowed them to
replicate similar experiments in schools using accessible resources.
The first training session for the calendar/ school year for
SSIP commenced from January 24th to 26th, 2025, bringing together educators
from Johannesburg Central, Johannesburg East, Johannesburg North, Johannesburg
South, and Johannesburg West. This session marked the beginning of a
transformative journey, equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to
enhance learning outcomes and drive academic success. The programme shall continue for two more weekends up until Sunday 9 February 2025.
At the start of each year, the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results are carefully analysed to pinpoint areas needing additional support in the 10 Gateway subjects. Schools and teachers who have not met provincial targets are prioritised for SSIP training. The programme caters to educators from Grade 10 to Grade 12, ensuring that learners receive consistent and effective instruction throughout their senior years. Grade 10 and 11 teachers receive training to build a strong foundation for learners progressing to Grade 12, while Grade 12 teachers focus on helping learners excel in their final matric examinations.
The 12 Gateway Subjects Covered by SSIP
- Physical Sciences
- Life Science
- Accounting
- Mathematics
- Mathematical Literacy
- Geography
- Business Studies
- Economics
- Technical Mathematics
- Technical Sciences
The topics covered in Grade 12 SSIP training are selected based on a Diagnostic Analysis Report from the previous year’s NSC examinations, along with internal moderation reports. For Grades 10 and 11, topics are chosen based on School-Based Assessments (SBA) reports and an analysis of final examination results from the previous year.
All educators participating in SSIP training undergo pre-tests and post-tests to assess their understanding and improvement. The programme maintains high training standards, with sessions monitored by Subject Coordinators from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE). These coordinators ensure that the training is delivered effectively and meets the required benchmarks.
As the academic year progresses, Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance extends its best wishes to the Class of 2025 for the year ahead. Hard work and dedication always yield success—keep striving for excellence!
