23 September 2026 | Vrededorp Campus
The Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG) came alive with colour, rhythm and shared stories as staff gathered at the Vrededorp Campus to celebrate Heritage Day under the theme, “Unity in Diversity.”
Held on 23 September 2026, the celebration was more than a commemoration – it was a vibrant reflection of who we are as an institution serving a diverse education sector. Staff members arrived dressed in their beautiful traditional attire, representing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up the MGSLG family and the South African nation.
The highlight of the day was a thought-provoking keynote lecture by special guest Dr Ntsoaki Mokala from the Wits School of Education.
Delivering a powerful address on “Preserving Indigenous Languages and Mother Tongue,” Dr Mokala challenged the audience to see language not just as a tool for communication, but as a vessel of history, wisdom and identity.
“When we preserve an indigenous language, we preserve a way of knowing, a way of being and a worldview. For educators, championing mother tongue is not about looking back, it is about giving our learners roots to stand on and wings to fly.”
— Dr Ntsoaki Mokala
She emphasised the critical role of teachers and school leaders in reclaiming and sustaining indigenous languages in classrooms, especially in the foundation phase, linking directly to MGSLG's mandate of strengthening professional practice.
The formal programme gave way to a joyful, interactive celebration of heritage. The day was filled with colour, song and activities that encouraged staff participation and provided an opportunity to celebrate the different cultures, traditions and experiences represented within MGSLG.
Through traditional attire, music, conversation and shared experiences, staff celebrated both their individual cultural identities and the values that unite the institution.
The celebration reinforced the importance of creating spaces where diversity is recognised, respected and celebrated while strengthening the sense of belonging among staff.
As an institution committed to leadership development, professional learning and educational transformation, MGSLG recognises that South Africa's cultural and linguistic diversity remains an important part of building an inclusive education system.
The Heritage Day celebration provided staff with an opportunity to reflect on this diversity while celebrating the people, languages and traditions that contribute to the identity of the organisation and the communities it serves.
MGSLG wishes all South Africans a meaningful Heritage Month.
