Subject Advisors Mentoring and Coaching Training

Subject advisors play an important role in improving the quality of education by supporting teachers with curriculum guidance and professional development. They ensure that subject content is taught effectively by helping educators understand policies, refine teaching methods, and apply appropriate assessment strategies.

In ensuring that all of the above is a success, The Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG) continues to support Subject Advisors with the relevant and necessary skills and knowledge required to fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

On 13 February 2026, Subject Advisors were trained on one of the key programmes that MGSLG offers – Mentoring and Coaching. This programme enhances the impact of Subject Advisors in advancing the goals of the Department of Basic Education.

Equipped with mentoring and coaching techniques, Subject Advisors can move beyond compliance monitoring to meaningful professional support that empowers educators. This leads to improved curriculum implementation, stronger learner performance, and more consistent standards across schools.

Dr. Vuyisile Khumalo, Senior Project Manager – School Governance and Leadership, MGSLG, explained the purpose of the programme: “This is an accredited programme with ETDP-SETA and is meant to provide Subject Advisors with the necessary skills, enabling them to effectively support, guide, and develop educators in schools to perform their work effectively.”

Ultimately, mentoring and coaching training enable Subject Advisors to become transformative leaders who inspire continuous professional growth and contribute to sustainable improvements in teaching and learning.
