Many deaf children experience significant delays in learning sign language, which adversely impacts their language development and literacy. The Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG) is unwavering in its mission to improve education for all learners in Gauteng Province.
In 2026, MGSLG, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), took decisive action by launching a comprehensive Sign Language training programme for educators across all phases. As of January 31, 2026, these educators are back in the classroom at St Vincent School for the Deaf, ready to make a difference.
Sign Language is essential for creating an inclusive education system. It enables Deaf learners to connect and communicate effectively with their peers. By training educators in Sign Language, MGSLG aims to enhance classroom communication, minimize reliance on interpreters, and foster a dynamic learning environment that boosts participation and confidence.
Miss Nozipho Xulu, Senior Project Manager in Teacher Development within the MGSLG, articulates how this vital programme came about: ‘’This programme is a response to the growing need to strengthen inclusive education and ensure that hearing-impaired learners are fully supported in the classroom. GDE and MGSLG identified gaps in educators' Sign Language capacity. They responded by equipping educators and their assistants with skills, resources, and curriculum-aligned support needed to improve teaching and learning outcomes for learners with hearing impairments’’.
From a societal perspective, this training is a powerful tool for social equity. By enabling educators with Sign Language skills, MGSLG empowers Deaf learners to pursue further education and thrive in the workforce, ensuring their active participation in society.
