The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), in collaboration with the Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG), is dedicated to enhancing, modernizing, and simplifying teaching and learning methods in schools across Gauteng by introducing Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This initiative has significantly improved the Gauteng Education System.
Here are some of the key objectives of implementing ICT in schools:
Workshops covered strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, and integrating AI into school governance. Participants praised the summit’s relevance and interactive sessions.
- Enhanced Learning Opportunities: ICT allows access to a wealth of information and educational resources, encouraging learners to delve into subjects beyond traditional textbooks and promoting more interactive, engaging, and self-directed learning.
- Improved Communication: ICT tools such as WhatsApp, MS Teams, and video conferencing facilitate easy communication for learners and teachers, enabling them to ask questions, share ideas, and collaborate even from different locations.
- Personalized Learning: ICT enables the use of adaptive learning technologies, allowing learners to progress at their own pace, access materials tailored to their learning styles, and receive customized feedback to enhance their understanding.
- Future-Ready Learners: By equipping learners with essential digital literacy skills for the modern workplace and fostering problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability in technology, learners are better prepared for future challenges.
In making this initiative effective and impactful, the MGSLG developed an Online Digital Learning Management Platform called Matthew Goniwe Online (MG Online). This Matthew Goniwe Online Learning Management System serves as a digital education platform aimed at improving teachers' professional development. It offers flexible, interactive, and structured learning experiences that align with the integration of ICTs in education. The platform includes multimedia content, assessments, discussion forums, and pathways for certification to support ongoing learning and capacity building.
This Platform is organized into three ICT Levels based on the UNESCO competency framework for teachers: Beginner (Technological Literacy), Intermediate (Knowledge Deepening), and Advanced (Knowledge Creation). Each course lasts 6 weeks and requires 40.5 notional hours to complete. Currently, there are 56 units spread across 6 tracks that address the specific needs of teachers. Upon completing each unit, teachers earn badges that can be converted into SACE POINTS. Additionally, teachers receive SACE-endorsed certificates upon finishing each track.
MGSLG continues to equip Educators using this MG Online Platform to enhance their ICT integration skills and expose them to digital tools and strategies for improved lesson delivery. From the 04th- 05th of March 2025, another new cohort of educators from across Gauteng has been trained on the MG Online in various venues in Gauteng-wide. This cohort of 200 educators will be trained continuously till March 2026. In summary, ICT transforms education by making learning more fun, practical, accessible, and engaging while equipping learners with skills essential for the modern world.
